Membrane:
Membrane
is a barrier that allows passage of certain components but rejects others.
Types of Membrane:
Recently
four
types of pressure-driven membranes are used-
- Microfiltration (MF) membrane: The pore size of this type of membrane is 0.1 µm. It usually separates Particles, Sediments, Algae, Protozoa, Bacteria etc.
- Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane: The pore size of this type of membrane is 0.01 µm. It usually separates small colloids, viruses etc.
- Nanofiltration (NF) membrane: The pore size of this type of membrane is 0.001 µm. It usually separates dissolved organic matters, divalent ions (Ca2+, Mg2+) etc.
- Reverse-osmosis (RO) membrane: It’s a semipermeable membrane. It usually separates monovalent ions (Na+, Cl-)
